Treating for Varroa mites is essential. This can mean some level of prevention, mechanical, or chemical treatment methods in order to lessen the spread of Varroa mites or to help kill off their populations. Colonies infested with Varroa mite that go untreated will die within a few years. It is a slow colony death, full of disease and shorter lifespans.

There is a lot of debate in the beekeeping community about chemical treatment, some beekeepers preferring not to treat. You should do your own research and come to whatever conclusion best suits you and your beekeeping goals. If you opt not to chemically treat your hives, it is highly recommended to employ other methods to help deter Varroa mite spread.

Varroa mites are a community problem and will not affect just your apiary, but the apiaries around you. When it comes to Varroa mites, please do your due diligence and make well informed decisions.
