What do I need to know if I want to sell my honey?

Before selling honey, make sure you do your research. Checking with local beekeepers is a good place to start and another good reason to join your local club.

To sell honey, you need to look at your country, state, or local laws. Check to see if there are any licenses needed to sell honey/be a food vendor. Checking your local and national laws is the most important thing to do. There could be regulations on labelling the honey for sale, specific needs for bottling, licensing, or any other specification.

One of the best things to do when considering selling honey would be to meet with local beekeeping associations and see what the local ordinances are – but always double checking for yourself! Interacting with local beekeepers will also help you see about pricing. This will allow you to see what is considered a fair price for the area and to not undercut other beekeepers. By speaking with local beekeepers, you can also figure out if any other honey related products sell well, such as honey sticks or whipped honey. If no one is selling any of those, you could try for yourself!

Look into local farmers’ markets – these are prime locations to sell honey. Check their guidelines (some will have specific rules about how many of one stand can be at one market, etc).

Once you’ve figured out where you’re going to sell, then it’s all about marketing! Figuring out labels, bottles, and how to promote yourself while selling is all up to you.
